Success Stories of New Media Potentials

New-media has been a key element for the success of entrepreneurial initiatives and professional networks. This is the conclusion drawn from the experiences shared by Andrew Zubiri, Craig Morris, and Romaine Reichenbach. Through the inspiring examples presented in this session, MEG alumni and students were able to learn first hand tips and tricks about the application of social-software in professional, academic, and small-business settings. Afterwards, there was time to discuss in small groups about helpful and annoying features of social-software tools.

About the Speakers

Andrew Zubiri

andrewAndrew Zubiri finished the MEG program in 2009 and is currently doing a Ph.D at the HafenCity University in Hamburg. He was an intern for the World Future Council Climate and Energy section between September 2009 and March 2010. Prior to coming to Germany, he completed a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Human Ecology and Human Settlements Planning at the University of the Philippines in Los Baños. He also worked for two and a half years at the National Economic and Development Authority, coordinating the formulation, evaluation, and review of projects, programs, and policies in the environment sector. His interest and experience in media include contributing essays and comments to national newspapers, newsletters and an internship at the English Programme of Deutsche Welle Radio in Bonn. To inform and assist his fellow Filipinos of scholarship opportunities abroad, he initiated the Pinoy Scholars network (www.pinoyscholars.wordpress.com), which is a platform for exchange for current, previous and aspiring scholars. In his free time, Andrew dabbles into photography, writing/blogging, and social networking.

 Craig Morris

Craig Morris

Based in Freiburg, Craig Morris has been working as a journalist in print and online media covering environmental and energy issues since 2002 both in German and English. He also directs Petite Planète, a translation agency of closely networked experts spread around the world without a central office. He will be discussing his experience between new and old media, with a particular emphasis on pointing out the benefits and drawbacks of each. Morris also has a blog is entitled "Always Greener: Notes from an American on the other side."

Romaine Reichenbach

RomaineRomaine Reichenbach, MEG alumni from the first generation, is originally from India. She lived for the first 20 years in Bombay and completed her Bachelor degree in Business Management. While pursuing an MBA in Lausanne, Switzerland, Romaine became interested in learning more about how business managers could contribute to solving environmental problems. This is why she later applied to the MEG programme. During this period, she worked for international companies such as BMW and IZES. Currently she is building her own company called ClickCareer, which focuses on organising internships in renewable energy at NGO projects in India. ClickCareer will offer good possibilities of social networking for students who are interested in working in India, but don’t have the contacts to do so.
